GEOGRAPHY
Portugal is located at the southwestern tip of Europe and includes the archipelagos of Madeira and the Azores in the Atlantic Ocean. On the European mainland, Portuguese territory covers an area of 88,889 km² (measuring 218 km in width and 561 km in length, with 832 km of Atlantic coastline and a 1,215 km land border with Spain). Situated in the Atlantic Ocean between the European and North American continents, the Azores archipelago covers an area of 2,355 km² and consists of nine islands: São Miguel and Santa Maria in the Eastern Group; Terceira, Graciosa, São Jorge, Pico, and Faial in the Central Group; and Flores and Corvo in the Western Group. Air links to mainland Portugal take approximately two hours. The Madeira Archipelago, with an area of 741 km², is located in the Atlantic Ocean, about 500 km from the African coast and 800 km from Cape Sagres, the southwesternmost point of the European mainland. The distance to Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, is approximately 1,000 km (a 1-hour-and-30-minute flight). It consists of the islands of Madeira and Porto Santo, and the uninhabited Desertas and Selvagens islands (which are natural reserve areas).
CLIMATE
Mainland Portugal - The climate in Portugal varies significantly from region to region and is influenced by topography, latitude, and proximity to the sea, which ensures mild winters, especially in the Algarve. In the Porto, Northern, and Central areas—particularly those closest to Spain—winters are colder, although temperatures remain moderate compared to the rest of Europe. Snowfall does occur, most frequently in the Serra da Estrela mountains, home to the highest point on the Portuguese mainland (1,991m) and a location suitable for skiing. Summers are hot and dry, especially in the interior regions, while coastal heat is tempered by maritime influence. Autumn often brings sunny days with mild temperatures.
Azores - Influenced by latitude and the regulating effect of the Gulf Stream, the Azores' climate is characterized by mild temperatures year-round. These factors also influence sea temperatures, which remain very pleasant in both winter and summer, allowing for various water sports.
Madeira - With subtropical characteristics resulting from its geographical location and mountainous terrain, the climate in the Madeira archipelago is exceptionally mild; average air temperatures range from 24°C in summer to 19°C in winter. Sea temperatures also remain very pleasant throughout the year due to the influence of the warm Gulf Stream, ranging from 18°C (winter) to 22°C (summer).
POPULATION
Portugal has a population of 11,343,066 inhabitants (according to the 2025 census). The highest population density is found in Lisbon, the country's capital, and its surrounding areas, home to approximately 2.8 million people. Portugal's second-largest city is Porto, located in the north of the country. Generally speaking, coastal areas have a higher population density than the country's interior.
RELIGION
The Portuguese people are predominantly Catholic, but the Portuguese Constitution guarantees religious freedom, resulting in the presence of various faiths in the country.
LANGUAGE
With Latin roots, Portuguese is spoken by approximately 260 million people across all continents; it is the fourth most spoken language in the world, and the third if considering only European languages. Portuguese-speaking countries are spread across the globe. Portuguese is spoken in Africa (Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, and São Tomé and Príncipe), South America (Brazil), and Asia (East Timor); it is also an official language in the Special Administrative Region of Macau.
In Portugal, a significant number of citizens communicate easily in English, French, and Spanish.
